Negrin, M.D., to its Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Negrin is one of the world’s leading experts in hematology and cellular immunology and joins Appia Bio’s scientific founders in advising the Company’s research and development.

Dr. Negrin is a professor of medicine and former chief of the Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation at Stanford University. His research work has focused on cellular immunology in particular developing a more fundamental understanding of complex biological reactions such as graft versus host and graft vs tumor reactions, with an emphasis on immune regulatory mechanisms. 

Dr. Negrin has authored more than 225 original papers, 40 book chapters, and a book, and has received a number of awards including the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award and is a member of the Association of American Physicians. He was previously the president of the International Society of Cellular Therapy and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. He served as an associate editor of the journal Blood and is the founding editor of Blood Advances. Dr. Negrin received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his medical degree from Harvard University. He trained in medicine and hematology at Stanford University and joined the faculty in 1990.

Dr. Cases is a proven life sciences executive who brings more than two decades of research and business development experience, including leadership positions at LynxBio, Johnson & Johnson, and Sanofi. Previously, she was vice president at Janssen Oncology, driving innovative and strategic partnerships to further develop Janssen’s industry-leading portfolio across oncology modalities. At Sanofi, she led the West Coast team to source and execute a variety of strategic alliances through collaborations, partnerships, and investments. Earlier in her career, Dr. Cases’ led research teams at Arete Therapeutics and Cytokinetics in  pharmacology and translational oncology respectively. Prior to moving to the private sector, she held an academic appointment at the Gladstone Institutes, University of California, San Francisco, where she focused on metabolism and the tumor microenvironment. Dr. Cases received her Ph.D. in molecular oncology from the Institut Gustave Roussy for Cancer Research, Villejuif/University of Paris VII.

Dr. Babayan joins Appia Bio from Instil Bio where he was vice president and head of regulatory affairs. In this position, he directed and coordinated all global regulatory affairs activities for Instil Bio’s portfolio of cancer cell therapy programs. Previously, Dr. Babayan was the director of regulatory affairs at Kite, a Gilead company, where he led the company’s first two investigational new drug (IND) applications – Yescarta® (axicabtagene ciloleucel) and Tecartus® (brexucabtagene autoleucel) and subsequently led all Regulatory CMC activities for Yescarta® from Phase 1 through BLA submission, while serving as the global regulatory lead for brexucabtagene autoleucel, and leading global regulatory for Kite’s allogeneic programs. API-192 is the first development candidate out of a 2021 collaboration and license agreement between Appia Bio and Kite, a Gilead Company. Previously, Dr. Roberts was principal scientist and director of immune and cell therapy at Cell Genesys, where she led the development and application of CAR technology to T cells and stem cells, culminating in the very first CAR T-cell clinical trial in 1994. Dr. Roberts continues to serve on Appia Bio’s Scientific Advisory Board.

Dr. Damiano joins Appia Bio from UNITY Biotechnology where he was vice president of biology, advancing a diverse portfolio of programs across multiple disease areas. Previously, he was the director of therapeutic antibody discovery and translational medicine at Achaogen and director of biology at Igenica Biotherapeutics, where he was responsible for establishing and advancing pipelines of novel biological therapeutics. Prior to that, Dr. Damiano was a senior research investigator in Oncology Biotherapeutics at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, and a scientist at Chiron. He received his Ph.D. in molecular and cellular pharmacology with a focus in cancer biology from the University of Arizona and completed his postdoctoral work in apoptosis and inflammation research under John Reed, M.D., Ph.D., at the Sanford Burnham Medical Discovery Institute.

Appia Bio appoints Margo Roberts, Ph.D. to its Board of Directors and names Jason Damiano, Ph.D. as Chief Scientific Officer

LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 19, 2021 – Appia Bio, Inc., an early stage biotechnology company developing engineered allogeneic cell therapies from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for cancer patients, today announced the addition of Qi Wei, PhD as Senior Vice President and Head of Technical Operations. Dr. Wei brings extensive experience in process development and GMP manufacturing. By leading the Company’s technical operations and GMP manufacturing, his team will contribute to Appia Bio’s advancement into clinical development.

He brings broad experience in viral vector and cell therapy process development and experience building GMP manufacturing for these technologies,” said JJ Kang, PhD, co-founder and chief executive officer of Appia Bio. “Qi’s technical operations and manufacturing team will be a critical pillar of our company and developing the ACUA platform.”

Dr. Wei brings nearly two decades of process and product development experience in cell and gene therapies at Novartis, Kite, a Gilead Company, Eli Lilly, TCR2 Therapeutics, and Geneception. He has held several leadership roles with a particular focus in cell and gene therapy, and has contributed to the development of several pioneering chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T products including Kymriah® (Novartis), the first CAR-T to be approved in the U.S., and Tecartus™ (Kite/Gilead), in addition to many CAR-T and T-cell receptor (TCR)-T clinical candidates.

Dr. Wei joins Appia Bio from Geneception Therapeutics which he co-founded as an executive-in-residence at F-Prime Capital. At Geneception, Dr. Wei served as the vice president and head of process and product development, overseeing the company’s CMC, process development, and manufacturing strategies for its cell and gene therapy pipeline. Previously he was at Kite where he served as the director of process development and had responsibility for multiple autologous and allogeneic cell therapy process development programs. Before Kite, Dr. Wei was at TCR2 Therapeutics where he was responsible for developing strategies for cell therapy and viral vector production processes for GMP manufacturing; Novartis’ Cell and Gene Therapy Unit where he led the production platform innovation efforts for viral vectors, as well as supported process development and technology transfer activities for Kymriah; and, Eli Lilly where he focused on process development of recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies. Dr. Wei holds a PhD in biomedical engineering from Columbia University.

LOS ANGELES, Calif., December 2, 2021 – Appia Bio, Inc., an early stage biotechnology company developing engineered allogeneic cell therapies from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for cancer patients, today announced the appointment of Irving Weissman, MD, and Mark Exley, PhD, to its Scientific Advisory Board. Drs. Weissman and Exley are two of the world’s foremost experts in stem cell biology and NKT cell biology, respectively, and join Appia Bio’s scientific founders in advising the Company’s research and development.

Appia Bio is focused on discovering and developing off-the-shelf allogeneic cell therapies across a broad array of cancer indications, utilizing a scalable technology platform with the goal to increase access for patients. With its ACUA technology platform, Appia Bio leverages the biology of lymphocyte development with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) and T-cell receptor (TCR) gene engineering to generate CAR-engineered invariant natural killer T (CAR-iNKT) cells from HSCs. The ACUA platform originated from groundbreaking research in the laboratory of Lili Yang, PhD, associate professor at UCLA and her collaborations with the Company’s other scientific founders.

Dr. Weissman is director of the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Professor of Clinical Investigation in Cancer Research, Professor of Developmental Biology and, by courtesy, of Biology. As the first scientist to identify and isolate mammalian blood-forming stem cells in mice, Dr. Weissman is considered the father of hematopoiesis, and is an expert in stem cell biology, cancer stem cells, and macrophage immune checkpoints. His group has successfully defined the stages of development that occur between stems cells and mature progeny. Dr. Weissman’s lab was the first to identify, prospectively isolate, and transplant human and murine HSCs. He earned an MD from Stanford University and a BS from Montana State College.

Dr. Exley is chief scientific officer at Imvax Inc. He performed the first functional characterization of human natural killer T (NKT) cells and brings deep expertise in NKT cell biology as well as the clinical application of NKT cell therapies. Previously, Dr. Exley was vice president, cellular immunology for AgenTus, on faculty at Harvard Medical School and at the University of Manchester, UK, where he retains honorary appointments, and was a scientist at Immulogic, Inc. He received his PhD from the Institute of Cancer Research, London and a BS from Imperial College, London, and completed his post-doctoral fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
